G&S Fruit Packers Status Reports
9/25/2013
  • We spent Sunday through
    Tuesday cleaning and painting
    the office area, and started
    with the packinghouse --
    everything looks much better.
    File drawers cleaned out, old
    records archived, ready for
    new season.
  • Reviewing shipping and
    customer data for accuracy,
training Karina on use of the
    new system.
  • Catalog design essentially
    finished, pending the cover
    design and custom pricing
    from a couple of customers.
    Janet will be contacting
    everyone to build your catalog
    orders.
  • Checked out the Honeybell
grove -- fruit looks good, and
there will a range of sizes.
Plenty of Baby Bells, as well
as some that are extra large.
  • Stopped by one of the Navel
    blocks that also has Sunburst
    and Orlandos.  Nice fruit -
should look good in the trays,
    and the flavor is typically
    excellent.
  • Servicing trucks and
    equipment to be ready for
    harvesting.  Bringing up two
    more fruit loaders from Ft.
    Pierce to allow faster
    transitioning between blocks
    during rush.
  • Following up with customers
    to finalize general details --
good to see many of you at the
    Gift Fruit Shippers Annual
    Meeting.
Status Report 10/4/2013

  • Cindy and I spent a day
    riding the various groves
    checking fruit earlier this
    week.  The crops look really
    nice, and the internal quality
looks like it will be excellent.
    Here are some highlights:

  1. Navels -- we're seeing the
first signs of color break, so
    they're getting close.  Good
brix levels for this time of
year.  Fruit is nice and clean.
    We have them in Phillips,
    Dudley Street, Mount Dora,
Dixie Royal, and our Hart and
    Byrd blocks.
  2. Orlando Tangelos -- an
    overlooked variety, and we
have some very nice fruit in
    the Dudley Street and Dixie
    Royal blocks.  Stay tuned for
    some new combo packs
    featuring Orlandos.  Should
be good for special offers on
    the websites.
  3. Sunburst -- looking good in
    Dixie Royal, Dudley Street,
    and Sunset Harbor blocks.
  4. Honeybells -- "On" years in
    Mount Dora and Sunset
Harbor, so we have a bunch.
    Some Alternaria that will
    require working with them.
Should be able to go long, but
    early fruit will probably be
    limited to "Firsts" and high
    priority.
  5. Satsumas -- We're keeping
an eye on a very nice block.
    Looks like November
    maturity realistically.  They
are intriguing, and we are very
    interested in the possibilities.
We may try to reserve a
couple of rows to play with
    them.

  • Catalogs are nearing
    completion.  Janet is calling
    to get your orders.
  • Computer system is coming
    along.  We're reconfiguring the
    network to improve
    usability.  Real-time credit
    card processing will
    significantly improve
    customer service and time
    required to process your
    orders.
  • In a nutshell -- so far, so good.
Status Report 10/20/13

  • Janet went down to the
    printers to check out the
    catalog last Thursday, and
    gave her stamp of
    approval.  The catalogs
    will go to print shortly,
and we'll be ready to insert
the gift lists and put 'em in
    the mail.
  • Karina and Beth have the
    item codes and prices set
    up in the order entry
    system, and we've started
    answering the phones and
    taking orders.
  • Bill, David, and Leonor
    have been pressure
    washing the entire
    packinghouse from end to
    end -- it looks great.
  • The trucks and fruit
    loaders have been serviced
    and the bins sorted out.
    Light harvest will begin in
    about a week, and then
    away we go!
  • April is setting up our
    new accounting system
    (Quickbooks), the
    merchant services account
has been set up, and we'll
be "live" by the end of this
    coming week with payroll,
    billing, and other
    bookkeeping functions.
  • Getting close!!  Call if you
    have questions or
    concerns, please!
